Chemistry is all around us, and reactive CFD plays a crucial role in analyzing and designing systems where chemical reactions occur. This training class provides a comprehensive overview of simulating chemical processes using OpenFOAM, focusing on practical applications with a modest amount of theory. The course is designed to equip users with the knowledge to set up and run species transport and finite-rate chemical reaction simulations (such as flames), understand relevant dictionary options, and troubleshoot common issues.
Topics to be covered:
Introduction to chemical applications
Basic case setup for OpenFOAM + chemistry using the solver multicomponentFluid (formerly called reactingFoam)
Species transport and diffusion modeling
Introduction to chemical mechanisms and CHEMKIN mechanism conversion
Chemistry acceleration techniques (Tabulated Dynamic Adaptive Chemistry, Local Time Stepping, and Dynamic Load Balancing)
Laminar and turbulent combustion models (flame simulations)
Use of additional OpenFOAM chemistry tools (including chemFoam, function objects, fvConstraints, dynamic meshing, packed bed reactor modeling with Langmuir Hinshelwood kinetics, and zone combustion)
Overview of chemistry with multiphase simulations (Euler-Euler and Euler-Lagrange), conjugate heat transfer and radiation modeling
Tips and tricks for reactive CFD
Survey of third-party OpenFOAM reactive CFD tools
Bonus slides and tutorial case: Introduction to the XiFluid solver
